The Cool Thing
The one cool thing I will never tire of doing on my days off are beer tastings. I know, I almost can’t believe I typed it out. A rep, either from the distributor or the brewery, brings in a grip of their beer for you to taste, and then talk about, all in hopes of getting on board your handle list. Killer. Today’s samplings were from Hale’s Brewing (Seattle, WA), Elysian Brewing (Seattle, WA), and Stone Brewing (San Diego, CA). Just a few of many beers I have wanted to put on tap since my opening day (I won’t go into my want list from Dogfish Head, Lagunitas, Anderson Valley, or Port Townsend).
Of all the delicious brews I tasted (that you will see sooner than later), I was most taken by the Stone IPA.
From their website:
The History of India Pale Ales: Originally developed in the late 1700’s, British breweries would send beer via sail to the troops and British expatriots in India. Problem was, there was no refrigeration and the ocean voyage took nearly five months. As a result, the beer would usually arrive in compromised condition. Well, the brewers of the time didn’t know as much about beer as we do today, but they did know that both hops (where we get the bitterness in beer) and alcohol act as natural preservatives. So, they came up with a brew that was intensely hopped and rather high in alcohol — thus the birth of the “India Pale Ale.” You’ll find our Stone India Pale Ale to be true to style with a huge hop aroma, flavor and bitterness throughout. If you’re a hop-head like us, then you’ll love our Stone India Pale Ale!
Deep Golden Color
An “India Pale Ale” by definition is highly hopped and high in alcohol (ours is 6.9% alc./vol.).
Medium Bodied Refreshing Ale
Light-medium malt character with a heavy dose of over the top hops! Two full weeks of “dry hopping” give this beer its abundant hop aroma and crisp hop flavor.
Only Barley, Hops, Water & Yeast are used.
No Chemical Preservatives
No Adjuncts (rice/corn)
CRAZY DELICIOUS. It doesn’t add up, but think big hop taste, without being overly bitter. A very balanced beer. Not as dark as some IPA’s. VERY drinkable. Like I said…CRAZY DELICIOUS! This Stone IPA will take over the trusty go-to handle of Fish Tale’s Organic IPA, but I am sure it will return (after some Lagunitas and Mongoose IPA take a turn).
I have more cool things to yammer on about (Tap beer to go! More hot dogs on the menu soon! More hot dog condiments (including BACON)! T-shirts! More new beers on tap! Dogs available later on Fridays and Saturdays!), but it will make for another fine post of it’s own!
